Brisbane Floods of 2011

During January of 2011 Brisbane and South East Queensland experienced the worst flooding since 1974. Below is a video highlighting the Brisbane and South East Queensland flood disaster. The floods hit businesses suddenly in the Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley region and businesses were unable to evacuate their IT systems and protect their premises.

The total cost of the floods highlighted by Moore (2011) an average loss of $834,992 for businesses that had to stop trading as a direct result of flood damage or power loss as measured by a measured by a Queensland Chamber of Commerce and Industry survey of almost 200 businesses. However, the median average loss was closer to $60,000, with the mean average swayed by losses incurred by heavy engineering and industrial firms.
For example, a cafe owner at South Bank Parklands said his business was without power for three weeks and lost $30,000 worth of stock due to the outage and replacement costs.

According to Rasmussen (2011) hundreds of businesses in Brisbane's CBD and other flood affected areas were at a standstill as they had no access to their computer networks and were stuggling to resume operations after the floods destroyed their IT systems or shut down offices resulting in lost productivity and trading.
